What makes a stator go bad?

I recently purchased a pontoon boat.It came with a 1973 85hp evinrude. I'm deciding if i want to keep motor or buy a new one.Would rather keep the evinrude.Anyhow it was not firing..i took the rectifier off and it started up.I only ran it for about 20 seconds or so then the fire was gone.I looked under the flywheel and the black gook stuff from the staor had dripped down on motor. From reading post this means the stator is out from best i could understand. Before i lost fire i used my multimeter touching the 2 brown wires going into power pack and got a reading of 650 ohms. After i lost fire i'm getting like .73 or something. So i'm assuming the stator went out but what would make it go out that fast? It has not ran in 2 years.Would that have something to do with it? I dont want to just go changing the stator if there is something else that made in go out? Also anyone have a schematic on changing the stator on a 1973 85 hp evinrude(4 cylinders). Thanks for any reply.

check for shorted regulator. It will overheat stator if shorted.

i disconnected the rectifier to see if thats why i couldnt get any fire.Iran the motor without the rectifier hooked up. Could that be the cause of stator going out so fast?

Re: What makes a stator go bad?

Not sure about the rectifier question. I had a similar problem with a '75 115. The stator melted. I didn't mess around. I found a donor motor from the 80's and used newer electronics. The original flywheel could not be used....wouldn't fit. I don't know if you can do this too. I don't remember if the upper head bearing is the same as the 135. I think it is, but I am not sure. I wouldn't mess around with 40 year old electronics after the main piece melted.......tick/tock. I'd go new with everything and if you go new, why not next gen stuff if it's feasable?
