What mix is the right mix ?..seen too many...

I would like to know what the manufacturer suggests for a 1969 johnson 20hp out board and then I would like to know what the "experts" would use due to wear...<br /><br />Thanx,Mike

Hi High Voltage,<br /> BOTH the experts and the manufacturer recommend a 50:1 ratio on that motor. Going a little richer won't hurt anything, but that's entirely up to you. Going leaner would be bad. <br /> The motor has the later 2-ring pistons and is completely "jeweled", which means it has a full complement of roller and needle bearings, which means it is perfectly happy on a diet of 50:1 mix using good quality oil and mid-grade (87 or 89) octane gas.<br />- Scott

OOOOPS !!!!!!<br /><br />I HAVE BEEN USING A 16:1 RATIO AND HIGH GRADE GAS ?....FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS TOTAL RUN TIME...<br /><br />AM I IN TROUBLE ?...<br /><br />tHANX AGAIN , MIKE

Highvoltage, thats pretty stout at 2 gal to 1 pint. I don't think it will hurt, probally smoke some what. 50 to 1 would be 6 gal gas 1 pint oil. Mr 56 johnson runs at 24:1 and I don"t see smoke except at start up.
