What MODEL is this mercury?

I am unsure what wiring diagram to use since they are designated by model and not serial number. It's a 1981 40 hp.

restornator, that is probably the same motor I have. If I had the serial number I might could help. Where are you looking at wiring diagrams? I don't know if we have the same problem or not but I have been going through the same thing looking for wiring diagrams and trying to figure out which one is right and I might could help you if I had this info. I think these engines are Mercury's "red headed stepchild."[/I]

Hi,

In 1981 they had 6 different models.
40M = manual start short shaft
40ML = manual start long shaft
40E = electric start short shaft
40EL = electric start long shaft
40EH = electric start tiller handle steering short shaft
40ELH = electric start tiller handle steering long shaft

The wiring diagrams are pretty much the same except for some simple
stop or kill switch circuits or the tach plug in circuit.
