What Model Starcraft is this?

So a coworker of mine said he has a possibly 16ft Starcraft with a 50hp motor that he wants to get rid of. It was a project boat that he doesn't want to deal with any more. He sent me some pictures and thinks it was made in 1972. The motor runs good.
Now I could just wait for him to find out some more info, but I'd like to know what model you guys think it is. I'm wondering if this was a split windshield model that has been modified?
I'll try and attach some pictures.

Re: What Model Starcraft is this?

that would the the famous "Previous Owner" model :D ie, hardly matters what it was, treat it as a blank canvas and build what you want. IMHO, there's too much missing to be worth getting too fretted about rebuilding exactly as original, but all the critical stuff that makes it float is there.

if i had to guess, based on the side console, i'd say most likely a 16SS, possibly a Mariner 16 or a Star Trek if they made those in 16'. bow treatment looks original so it probably wasn't a closed-bow Holiday or Jupiter, plus console remnants look wrong for those. i'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me (don't take much....) will chime in. have you looked at the '72 brochures in the sticky above? looks like a decent little boat if price is right.

I was looking at the 1972 brochures and I think it may be a Mariner-V16. He said he has a lot more stuff to include in the sale, including a new floor. I'm interested to know what a "heck of a deal" is. I have no idea what it's worth.

Ski--that looks to be about the easiest restore around, transom might take 4 hours to replace. :D don't place too much value on the floors til you see em and determine fit and that they're not treated plywood. i'd offer him maybe 500 if it's currently usable as is. or let him toss out a # and see just how eager he is to quit looking at it (or how eager his wife is....;) )

Yup, looks like a Mariner to me. I owned one of those. For a day.

Yah, agree with barato, super easy boat to rebuild!

Go for it:thumb:

Re: What Model Starcraft is this?

cool little boat whatever it is!

it bet it has some structural baggage. i can almost guarantee that the SB side spray rail is cracked right above the trailer tire:

which is why you see the 2 braces:

it wouldn't scare me away though...but that's not sayin' much

hmmm....i'd thought those were factory. if not, it suggests that at least someone who worked on the boat before wasn't a total dolt. but yeah, good reasoning.
Ski, BF knows Whereof He Speaks....he's stood between the smelter and maybe the scariest hull i've seen and is the Ace #1 Hidden Damage Detective. get some better pix before you close the deal and i bet he can spot some more negotiating leverage issues................

the braces do seem to have been added after the paint was applied to the inside of the gunwales

Yep Starcraft didn't start with the chine bracing until the 80s

I'd almost be willing to bet it is a 16ss not a mariner, what is remaining of the console appears to be a SS console not homemade, and looking the pics, you can see where the inter gunwale trim dips in where the console for the port side should be.

What's he asking for it?

Looks good to me. I'd slap in a center console in her along with a new deck and transom then hit the water.

I believe that it's ~ a '67 Mariner. They were side-consoles back then, bench helm & front wooden bench seat.

this would be a great restore esp with the original motor.

Geez, You guys sure do know your boats! Thanks for all the advice. He has not told me what he wants for it nor what else is included in the deal. I hope to go see it soon and will take additional pictures and all your comments into consideration. I'll get back to you when I know more.

The bench seat cleat at the bow:

Indicates BF is on point w/ his Mariner V brochure match.

And could easily be right about it not being a 1972. Merc motor is probably a 1972, blue band 50hp.

Re: What Model Starcraft is this?

So I was thinking, if I do Buy the boat and make it a little fishing machine, should I keep the bench seats and put swivel seats atop the benches or do I just keep the benches out and install the new floor with seats centered down the middle. I'm thinking that if I lose the benches, it will free up more room in the boat and the 360 degree seats will make it a bit more versatile for fishing.

any advice or links would be helpful

Sounds good to me ski. That's the great thing with these boats... you can make 'em your own.

Re: What Model Starcraft is this?

W/ a sound hull, gunwales & transom (you probably have 2 of 3) it's a completely blank canvas that will let you build it out however YOU want..... Benches w/ swivel seats aren't ideal, IMO, but you could still do a deck (floor) even if you build benches w/ swivel seats.

Don't overlook the importance of flotation foam during your re-build, no matter which way you proceed.

Look thru Jas' Jet thread & the other SC resto's & decide how you want to build it out
1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild (sold)

Starcraft Rebuilds and Restorations

Then the mob will pile on to help you figure out the what, how & where of the specifics..............

The forward bench is structural...and this hull has signs that it may have experienced some form(s) of trauma already.

3 ideas:
  1. keep the bench & fabricate a raise bow deck (con: you're adding weight & raising the center of gravity a bit)
  2. ditch the bench and create a bulkhead that spans the 2 gunwales..but maybe 1/2 as high as that bench...then build a raised-deck off of that. You could always tie-in the upper gunwale-to-bulkhead with a simple brace.
  3. fabricate a beautiful dark-grained wood bench, distressed and slathered with spar varnish and throw a swivel seat on-it. That bench is quite high already.

options 1 & 2 give you a nice fishing platform + dry-storage. option 1 would be a little less stable due to the bench-height. both are adding weight to the bow which can influence performance. option 3 keeps weight down (at the expense of storage & raised deck).

Re: What Model Starcraft is this?

Yep ^^^

I didn't mean to give the impression that some sort of support didn't need to be put back, just it depends on how you want to build it out, then address the support issues.

Re: What Model Starcraft is this?

ski---where do you plan on using it? big water or small ponds? what kind of fishing do you usually do? looking at these Qs might help the decision. BF is right, you need some sort of support there if you don't replace the bench. maybe go the raised deck route if you fish small lakes, worry more about keeping CG low if you're heading for Erie?
