What Motor Do I Have?

The model number is C40TLRW and the mfg date says 04/97, but when I went today to buy a water pump impeller the model number says it is a 1998. I also bought a Clymer shop manual for the motor but it indicates that a C40 is a 2 cylinder, but mine is a 3 cylinder. Call me confused.

Additionally, the instructions for removing the lower unit indicates I have to get two wrenches on the shift shaft connector but there is no way. What the heck is up with this? Are all Clymer manuals this vague/bad?

Anyone out there ever drop the lower unit on one of these, if so what is the trick? Any help is greatly appreciated.

[colour=blue]Warners dock list it as a 1998.

Outboard parts list it as a 1997.

Nada list it as a 2 cylinder 1998.

Ring yamaha.

Ditch the clymers, they have been known to be inaccurate.

Thanks for all the info. My problem is that I can't see how to get a wrench on the jam nut. I can get one on the top (connector) nut, but the jam nut is not accessible. Should I just turn the connector nut and not worry about holding the jam nut, but won't that affect the reconnect?

More sad news. The fitting is round and does not have anywhere for a wrench to grab. I have taken some pix if someone can tell me how to attach one to this.

Re: What Motor Do I Have?

Finally got in touch with Yamaha and resolved the issue; I hope. According to them the shift linkage just slides out of the fitting and there is no jamb nut or any other nut to undo, hence no procedure in their own service manual because "a procedure is not needed". Anyway I will probably unbolt the unit tomorrow and try it out; will let ya know how she goes.

By the way, sorry about the photos, couldn't figure out how to get 'em posted right.

Re: What Motor Do I Have?

Well that was the easiest lower unit I have ever dropped. No shift linkage to disconnect at all; the shift rod is splined and the lower unit just pulls off. Sure do wish they would have said that in the service manual; sure would'a saved me some consternation. Anyway, I got 'er done and she is working fine. Thanks for all of the input.
