Sorry for the additional post. I am new to pontoons & am trying to get as many answers I can. This website is a WEALTH of knowledge (almost too much!) & everybody on here is great help & I appreciate your experience & input. I am still trying to figure out which length & hp will work best for me & need some additional input, before I take the plunge & I really don't want to regret my purchase. As stated in my previous post, I want to buy used with a budget of less than $8000.

The majority of the usage will be for fishing, but I also plan on occasionally entertaining a few other friends & pulling the kids in a tube. My oldest child is 7 & my twins are 5, so I wouldn't need too much power to go real fast. Just enough for a fun little ride for them. I think I have made my decision to get either a 22' or 24' length, not only for "elbow room" for my family of 5, but to accomidate a few others as well.

I am just still stuck on the size of motor would best meet my needs. I don't want to get an over-sized motor for fishing & an occasional tubing (for smaller kids). I have done numerous searches & I have seen tubing posts with anywhere from a 50hp clear up to 115hp. I oculd be wrong (which most of the time I am), but 115hp just seems like it would be too much motor for what I am looking at doing with the pontoon. Anybody out there use their pontoon in a similar way? What has worked for you? Any suggestions are very much appreciated?

I would think a 90 would do what you want and not be too big, don't think I would go smaller than that though and that is a pretty common engine on the size of boat you are looking for.

As 5150 said, a 90 is the minimum and I would go for the 115. You don't have to run the 115 wide open and as a senior citizen, I assure you that those kids will be teenagers much faster than you can imagine.

I have a 90 on my 24 ft pontoon and usually with 2 adults and 4-6 kids depending on the day i get around 23 mph @ WOT which is a good speed for tubing or whatnot. On the other hand I would be quite happy with the 115. Like EGlideRider said with a 115 you still can go the top speed of a 90 but with less throttle which means less gas. If you do purchase one with a 115 and you absolutely hate it we could always swap for my 90! I hope you find what your looking for and please let us know what you decide on getting!

Just speaking from my person experience. I set out looking for a 90-115hp. However they were REALLY hard to find. At the lake where we have ours in a slip, you see everything from 25-75hp. There is not ONE 90 or above on a pontoon. We have a 75hp and it pulls people fine. Now it isnt the same pull as our previous bass boat of 225hp, but they still have alot of fun! The bigger motor just means more gas consumption if that is all you are going to do with it!

I sure ditto that!
I have a 115 on mine & seldom run wide open-
I cruise at about 3/4 throttle (20mph) & am happy with that-
