I've been looking at a boat I like ('79 Slickcraft SS 235)
In the description, it says "powered by 245 OMC V8 with 1,038 Hrs."
Looks like a GM 305 to me, but you guys'd know better. the outdrive is missing.

Would it be difficult to fit a new engine (305 or 350) with a Mercruiser outdrive in the same boat?

This is just speculation.
Any info is appreciated

Ayuh,.......... It's a SBC,....
But without some Block Casting #s,......
There's No Way to tell Which 1...............

Would it be difficult to fit a new engine (305 or 350) with a Mercruiser outdrive in the same boat?

Sure,...... Why Not,.......
Just Strip Out Everything,... Glass in the Transom,......
And,...
Install Whatever you'd like............

could be
283
327
348
350
casting # or physical measurements is the only way
might be the pic, but the harmonic balancer looks like its sticking out a bit far.

the motor itself is an sbc? I've never even heard of 'em.....

I really want the boat for the hull, not the engine. Since it doesn't even have an outdrive, I might as well start fresh. The boat is a few hundred miles away, and now isn't the best time financially, so I prob'ly won't buy that particular one. The boat's a steal though- $700
So tempting.

That looks like quite the project boat. You would have to throw out all the OMC and replace with Merc or Volvo. Lots of work and $$. You would probably be better off buying a complete boat with all the parts. It would be cheaper in the long run.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Just to be clear... when they say it is an sbc, they mean it is a "Small Block Chevy" - hence the SBC. Small blocks came in different cubic inches - all with the same outward appearance.

I say run!......;)

Haut's right......there's a reason for the $700.00 dollar price tag. If it were free you'd only save $700.00 on the whole project.........'bout enough for a trailer that needs work too.:eek:

They want to give you $700 to take the boat? I would only do it if you can find a boat wrecking yard on the way home that won't charge you to take it.

Otherwise I wouldn't take $700 to haul it away.

Sorry.

$700 for a 30 year old boat that has been sitting out in the weather for years and need to be completely repowered IS NOT a steal.

It is a RIP-OFF

Thanks for explaining about the engine size, etc...
I'm familiar with the small block chevy car engines, but have a hard time recognizing the marinized ones...

I agree with you all about the boat. Though I'm looking for a project, I think I'm gonna' start with something that's in better condition. Having re-done several boats, I know that even if everything looks great (ie; different boat), there's always plenty of work that can be done.

$700.00 - boat
$700.00 - trailer
$700.00 - I/O
$700.00 - engine
$700.00 - controls/Elec
$700.00 - Upholstery
$700.00 - Floor & stringer replacement
$700.00 - Incendentals
-----------------------
Expensed $5600.00 for a 30yr old boat, still worth about $700.00.
SUCH A DEAL!!

Re: What motor is this? (Pic)

I got one of those. Cept one thing are you sure thats a 79? It looks more like a 71 or 72. 305 OMC stringer 400 elect.shift... Built in Holland Mi..In any case it's prior to AMF (AMF logo would have been part of the slickcraft emblem) which was just around the early 70s. Yeah I know that boat inards and outards. If the hull is in good conditon it's a great project boat. It'll be more than happy to lighten your wallet. Let me know if you'd like any info on it. Check the tag on the year. It could be a 79 but it sure looks like a early 70's in that pic. At any rate I agree that $700 is too much but then when you point out all it needs perhaps you can barter some.

If you end up interested enough to look at it take an ice pick to the inside of the motor well just where the motor cover meets the bulkhead and around the intermediate at the transom (your lucy that area is accessable). Another place is just in front of the gas tank and to the forward sides of that compartment as well. stomp the floor real good as these boats were built like a brick sh!t house and any give what so ever between the head to the transonm will be evidence of a very serious problem. Dont think twice about walking away if you see too many deficiencies in the hull but if it's in good shape, it's a great project boat. Looks like it'd keep ya plenty busy. The shine on my hull came back really nice. I dumped the 305 for a 350 and she moves along nicely.

That's an OMC - 327/245hp 4bbl small block chevy, a friend of mine had the same motor in an early 70's SeaRay. Quite a little powerhouse for the time.

700 is alot for a hull with an engine with no carb sitting in the dirt. He should be giving you 300 to take it away. I bought a 18ft with omc 120 and a trailer for 750, had an outdrive but it was toast anyways. 700 for an old hull isn't that great at all.

Re: What motor is this? (Pic)

to answer your question on what motor look at the back corner of the block where the bell housing bolts up. the type of motor should be cast in to the block itself.

Re: What motor is this? (Pic)

Too bad somebody let the boat go downhill like that... it is a nice looking hull configuration. Saltwater I reckon... let things get away from you and it's all downhill from there.
