So I am crusing down the river and that horible knocking starts and the motor dies (right in front of a great beer/brats bar  ) long story short I melted a piston :(

Now I am going to look for a new (used) motor for my boat. The old motor is a 1982 merc 90 l6. I liked it fine and was well powered for my boat, a bit noisy tho.

I am looking for opinions on what motor I should get now. I want a 1990 or newer, quieter, and around the same HP. hopefuly under $2000.

Any ony one want to toss their twocents at me on this? What is, was your favorite motor?

Re: what motor to get?

i have a 1976 merc 1150 that runs better than ANY motor you get to replace that 90hp I6

WHY did it melt a piston....99%of the time its users fault...improper maintnace or soemthing

if you dont fix what caused the first motor to melt a piston, youll melta another....

get your I6 rebuilt , save some cash, and youll have a BRAND NEW motor, that will outlast and outperform any 1990 or newer 2000 dollar motor

clams canino has a rebuilt I6 powerhead with warranty on ebay for under a grand whcih will bolt up 100% to your motor. do that and you can buy a lot of gas and synthetic 2stroke oil for the extra grand

just my 2 cents

Re: what motor to get?

I was thinking of a new powerhead but I have had ignition problems, carb problems(hence burnt piston), and my control box intermitently shocks me. I am tired of figuring out what is wrong so I can have fun.
Oh I did rebuild those carbs. New impellor peeing strong, link and sync good.

I just want a reliable motor. It really hurts to put that much effort into something and have it crap out, this happened whith my uncles, father, brother, and grandmother expecting to see me pull up to the dock to take my grandfathers ashes into the mississippi to spread per his wishes. We rented a boat and all was well. BUT I dont want motor problems to happen again if I can help it.

Re: what motor to get?

how do you know those problems dont come back to a different motor.....for 2 grand your not getting anything new with warranty, your getting somebody elses problem child...reborn....

i would strongly suggest looking into what happened to first motor and how you can prevent that same thing from happening again... to next motor, whatever it may be.....

all of those probs you stated above are simple fixes....

i just dont want you to get another motor, and have some lil tech* difficulties stop you from boating...

m ikey

no I will never stop boating. I guess I am just bummed. you are right of course, I am just not in a mood to be"nice" to that motor right now I would rather smack it with a hammer.
I have a mech buddy near here who will give me a mid 80s johnson 100 rebuilt with controls and all for 1800 installed. plus he said he will buy the merc from me. we havent talked money on that yet but...

What I was really looking for is what motor would you get? I wanted a quieter motor the whole time any how.

As for not boating...HAHAHA right I live for that river, it is my church. I am more worried about repowering quickly so I can get back there, there is only so much summer in Iowa.
