I have a 1983 glastron with 1981 omc i/o, I want to change the oil in the sterndrive but not sure what to use. It looks like the same oil would be used for the upper and lower unit. There are 4 plugs 2 on the upper and 2 on the lower. I think i've got how to replace the oil just not sure what lubrication to use.

1981 stringer, if its a 800 model v6 or v8 its like mine. Hydro mechanical shift.
A good OMC mechanic told me to use the OMC blue synthetic lube everywhere including the tilt gear unit.
Also use the OMC triple guard grease. Don't forget to grease the swivel bearing.
I have done this since I owned this boat 3 years now. No problems yet.
Don't find water in the tilt gear housing which unusual I hear.

Thanks for the reply. Next is to find where to buy it. Is there a grease fitting to lube the swivel bearing? It is a v6 not sure how to tell if it is an 800 model. the unit is all white with a v6 sticker on it.

if it is a v6 then you have a 800 series and you can find the oil at any marine supply place or from any of the online marine supply sites

good luck

Moly Universal Gear Lube is also an excellent gear oil. The oil/ water separation is unbelievable!! If you do get water in the sterdrive, wait a day and pull the bottom plug and the water will drain out first.

Look on the front side of the drive ( just behind the transom) about 1/2 way down there is a small hole in the middle. Back in there is the swivel bearing grease zerk. A small flex hose and a small grease coupling head will go in and
find the zerk.
Give it about 10 shots of triple guard grease. If the swivel seals are going bad this will seal them.
You will know if you have a problem with them, your temp will suddenly go up.
This is caused by the exhaust gases being sucked past the seals and going in the cooling water.
I know sounds nuts but it happened to me. All at once the temp started climbing, took boat home changed both water pumps, no help.
A OMC mechanic told me about the seals going bad, said give them about 12
shots of grease to seal them. IT WORKED!
Replaced lower next year with a full mechanical shift, New seals , No problems

Thank you for all your responses. I'm very new to owning a boat and always want to learn more. You guys are great and very helpful. Unfortunately the only accessible marine store is West Marine which none of them including the owner knows much about boats, just how to collect money. Thanks again for all your help.

There a 3 places to change the oil in the out drive. I use wal-mart marine gear oil.

Make sure you pump it up from the bottom holes in the lower and upper. In the intermediate just squeeze it in slow from the top plug hole. 7 oz.

The tilt clutch takes 30 weight straight oil. Heres a old post will help you with the tilt.

Good idea to check the tilt housing cause your gonna have water in there for sure.

Good luck your gonna need it!
