What prop should I have - 99 Ranger

Hello. I bought a 99 Ranger R61 with a 90hp Mariner. Marina checked it out and said good compression. It has a three blade (21 pitch) aluminium prop (its a little chewed up). However, it takes forever to get up and plane out. I have to have someone get on the front bass deck to get it to plane. When it does plane (after bouncing and then finally settling) it runs nicely at about 42mph per the speedometer.

I would like to get up on plane much quicker and without having someone sit on the front deck. Is this possible? Would a different prop help make this happen? Which prop and what pitch? Any other ideas? Thanks!!

What's the top rpm of the prop you have now?

It was at 5800 to 6000 last weekend WOT. Thanks.

At 6000 top rpm the holeshot should be quite decent. However, you're at about 30% slip. Not good at all. We'll assume the motor just revs up and does not want to break over on plane. Are you running the trim all the way in to take off or leaving it out some?

You are correct about the engine reving up. When it finally comes out of the water it bounces around and sounds like the motor is WOT but in nuetral. After a second, it settles in and runs fine accross the water. Pardon my ignorance, but what is slip (30%) and how do I fix that?

I had the motor trimmed up a little to take off but I have also tried it trimmed all the way down. Same result. I just assumed that a 4 blade lower pitch prop would help me get up on plane a lot quicker and without having to put someone on the front deck. What do you think? THANKS!!

The percentage of slip is how your overall efficieny is evaluated. Somewhere around 12% is acceptable, depending on hull design of course. Anything under 10% is really good.

OK, it sounds like your existing prop is truly worn out. Typically an older Ranger can benifit from a bow lifting prop although lately we've found a prop with overall lift works as well or better.

If I were setting up this rig I'd look at something like a Turbo Lightning Jr in probably a 20" pitch.
