What Prop Should I use

Hi All,

I have a 2000 50 hp Johnson with a 15 pitch on it. It seems to run fine for me (my boating experience is fairly limited), but I recently had a buddy of mine on the boat and he thinks that I am not using the correct prop for my boat. It runs about 5600 RPM (28 mph on GPS), but he thinks it's putting a lot of stain on the motor.

Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on the correct prop for this motor (it on a 16CC Key Largo Hull).

Thanks and have a great day.

Regards

Re: What Prop Should I use

Proper prop is determined largely by RPM. Most important thing to do is find out what the recommended RPM range is for your motor and try to get your set up to run near the top of that range with boat loaded as you normally would use it. I don't know the specifics of that motor but my guess is you're either near or slightly over the recommended RPM's. If you were slightly over, dropping pitch 2 inches should drop RPM somewhere around 300 RPM.
