What prop to use??

I bought a Lund Classic 1775 SS with a 90 hp Merc 4 stroke. I've never used a boat with such a large motor or console steering so this is totally new to me. My question is this; I was only going about 30 mph top speed so I mentioned it to my dealer where I bought it and they switched the 15 deg. prop that was on it to a 17 deg. I haven't tried it yet but I have done some research on Mercury's website as well as a couple other prop manufacturers and they all suggest such a wide array of prop styles and pitches that my head is spinning( seems 19 deg. could be more appropriate from what I'm reading). What should my top speed be approximately, I was thinking it should be closer to 40mph at least? What degree prop would others suggest? Any other suggestions to maximize my boat/motors performance? I may also buy a Turning Point Prop instead of a Mercury to save a bit of cash, is this wise or should I stick with Mercury products? This is all new to me so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well first of all prop pitch is measured in inches.
We need your max rpm and speed, GPS if possible. Also the motors recommended max rpm. Also your typical activities. It does appear that with an ideal setup you would be close to the 40 mph range. They usually like to prop the 4 strokes at their max rpm.
You could also optimize your setup. Starting with the anti vent plate even with the bottom of the boat raise the motor a hole at a time till just before venting becomes a problem.Let us know the max rpm and speed (gps)with the 17" prop.
