Re: what prop

Choosing props reqires looking at facts like how heavy the boat will be when loaded with people, gas, beer, fishing tackle, bait box, etcetera. Two 250 lb fisherman are going to give that 25 horse motor a job and a half trying to get that jon boat up on plane even without all the baggage.
The shade tree method of evaluating a prop requires a tachometer and a place to run the boat with the estimated load at wide open throttle. If the motor tops out at about 5500 rpm the prop is about right.
The shortcoming of this method is that it assumes the motor is in fairly good condition. If the motor is half shot or way out of tune it may not be capable of pulling 5500 with any prop.
Since 1978 was a long time ago you may want to put the motor into tiptop shape before playing with the prop.
