I am looking to buy a pwc for my son. I want to keep the cost down, so I am looking at older models(mid 90's). I know with age and how someone kept up the pwc makes a big difference. But if anyone can lead me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

i have a 1993 Yamaha 500cc. runs better, more dependable than the new ones. it's only 32 hp so it is not strong enough to tear itself up.

ok i have owned alot of skis dating back to a 89 seadoo sp 580, which i still have, but doesnt run currently~charging issues. owned all the way up to 06 yamaha fx cruisers. as far as reliability, i am biased to yamaha, as long as it is a non powervalve motor, valve fail and a little pricy to repair. a yama gp 760is a great ski, very stable one up, has trim, full guages, and will run around 52-55 mph. if you are wanting a two up ski go with a 3 seater, xl in the yama line. in essence a 2 person ski is a stable one person, and a 3person ski is a stable 2 person ski. only issues in the mid to late 90s on yama is the fuel sending units, about 130 to replace and you can do it yourself, real easy. Go over to pwctoday.com, lots of info there in the forums.

Personaly I would consider the old Kawasaki X2, not only are they relatively cheap, they were produced with few major changes for 10 years from 1985-95. They were also a combination stand up or sit down ski, great for people that don't know what they want. The stock 650 puts out 50 something HP, enough to have fun with, certianly enough to get started with. Also parts are CHEAP, a running used 650 engine goes for $200-300 on ebay sometimes less, where the 750 may run twice that, and a 900 would likely sell over $1000.

a sea doo gtx, most stable hull of them all. the rfi has a very reliable 800cc motor. in big chop, faster and more stable for the beginner. i have owned, a gtx, gp800, xlt1200, xpl with 1050 motor, had a kaw 1200 for a weekend ride and also owned a 2 seater sea doo gsx limited with 951 motor. the only one my wife liked was the 3 seater gtx, by and far the fastest ski for her because of the stability
