my dad is having overheating problems in his 1976 19' glassply. mechanic told him the engine is worn out. he is thinking about replacing the engine and outdrive. what would be the best fitting newer style motor and drive that would require the least amount of transom work? he is happy with the 140hp as far as speed goes but wouldn't be upset if he went up a couple of HPs.

If everything else is ok, then a 'worn out' engine shouldn't be overheating, just not going as quick as a newer one. If it's still pushing the boat satisfactorily then find the source of the overheat. That said (and my unfamiliarity with your engine) the 1976 OMC is getting a bit old, and parts are VERY difficult to get...

Hopefully someone like Don S will chime in and give you advise on the replaceability of that engine/drive. If it's a stringer drive, then you're up for reglassing the transom, regardless of which engine/drive you purchase.

There is no such thing as "least amount of transom work" when replacing a stringer. The transom instead of the stringers become the thrust bearing surface and it has to be strong. A lot of boats designed for stringer mounts had thinner transoms than for other drives. It CAN be done, but it's a job for a professional glass man.

Ayuh,... Sounds like Dad needs a New Mechanic...

Worn out rarely leads to Overheating per'se...
Or,...
We're missing Most of the story...
And,..
As noted, there's No easy swap for a stringer drive..

well, he has had the engine gone thru top to bottom. new impeller, head gasket, manifold, had heat exchanger inspected, new risers, new water pump. new gauge and a backup mechanical gauge. he is running a new 164 t-stat and the engine still runs 180-190 reading on both gauges. on his old gauge it would read 210. oh ya new sending unit on the gauge. mechanic told him that the engine is probably working too hard to try to maintain 3750 rpms and that is why the temps are creeping up. this issue popped up last summer. when he put the boat away for the year everything was working fine but the first time out the next year it was over heating.

May have corrosion issues in the water passages in the outdrive and intermediate housing. I doubt there is any problems with the engine. The big problem is, if that is your problem, those parts aren't available unless you find some good used ones somewhere. That too is getting hard to do.
How is the rest of the boat, Glasplys were noted for rotten stringers, transom and decks. I had to replace mine in a 21 Glasply I owned years ago.
