I have a 1980 merc 228 , It runs great out on the water but when it warms up it wont idle. As long as I am above idle speed it doesnt hesitate , miss, or sputter. It has not ran hot or anything like that. I am thinking about pulling the carb and cleaning it, or running some cleaner through it. The boat had been sitting a while before I bought it. Also I am replacing the shifter and I would like to know what the two yellow wires and some little switch are that are on the throttle control. Thanks in advance.

Double check your timing and carb settings. If it's been sitting a while I would deffinatly recomend a rebuild just as preventative maintenance

Ayuh,... That's the neutral start safety switch...
it's wired in-line with the keystart...

running some cleaner through it.

Don't waste your time and money running cleaner through it. If it is gummed up it will need to be completely disassembled and rebuilt. Not difficult to do... just take your time and blow out everything. Soak it in a gallon of good quality carb cleaner.
