The shop drained my tank, claiming it has water in the fuel (50-1 mix). What can I/should I do with the gas I have that they drained from the tank? Suggestions? Anyway to save any of this gas for the weedeater?

Does pouring through a chamois catch the water?

Let it sit for a while, siphon of the top 80% and use it in the lawn mower.

Put it in a container with a tap at the bottom, let it rest for a bit, then open the tap.

You'll drain off the water first. Wait till gas begins to come out, and you've got yourself a container full of neat gas.

First off, don't add alcohol. Add a small amount of 2-stroke oil. That will dye the gas and help you distinguish if from the clear water. The oil will also help the water settle out more completely. Water will settle to the bottom. Situate the container so that the water will settle in a corner that you can reach with a syphon hose. Syphon it into a container until the water is out. You'll be able to tell by the color when the gas starts flowing.

I do this alot for customers. Every portable tank gets this treatment. I never stick a customer with the "contaminated" gas. It's too darned easy to just remove the contaminant (water) and leave the gas in. The gas is just fine. Naturally it's a bit more difficult with built-in tanks. But if you can access a low corner, the same method applies. Raising the tongue jack and letting most of the air out of a trailer tire is an easy way to make a low corner to draw from. You just have to get the hose there. :)

This has nothing to do with your problem, but is another easy way to deal with water comtamination. After winterizing hundreds of boats each year, one accumulates a lot of drain oil. Some of that contains water. Those that collect waste oil to burn in furnaces wouldn't take Marina oil because of the water. I just let the containers outside to freeze and poured off the oil into another container. Same would apply to gas. Wrong time of year for that, though. ;)

Thank you all for the information. Anyone else have any thoughts on installing a water filter (see first reply)? It sounds like a good idea to me.

Haven't seen this suggested here before, but West Marine and others are now carrying a new funnel/filter product that filters out water from the fuel that is poured through it. Just need to pour your bad fuel into another container using the funnel. Haven't used it myself so don't know how well it works. Cost is about $12 to $15 depending on which size you get. At the price of fuel/oil mix these days it might be well worth a try.

This is similar to what I mentioned above - a chamois. The "old timers" I know who are private bush pilots and/or drive their boats into the bush where they are extremely sensitive to preventing water in fuel problems, always pour their fuel through a funnel with a chamois. Or if they're uesing a fuel cache that might have a little contamination (or unknown). Supposedly catches the water. It's always been conventional wisdom around here, and that's why I was asking if anyone knew anything about it. I'm interested in the funnel you mention and plan to check it out. Reading their product description, it really isn't clear how it works, but the single testimonial indicates it does - and that it was originally developed for bush pilots - like teh chamois thing above.. I might buy one. When I drain my water sep. filter, I sometimes have a few ounces of water and fuel which I could experiment with to see if it actually works. This has never been much of an issue for me as I've always had a water separating filter on my boats and drain and/or replace regularly. I am of the school of thought that every boat, especially with fixed tanks, should ahve a water sep. filter. Thanks for the pointer.

Find a local mechanic/gas station. They will have a waste tank that the dump their oil/transmission fluid into. You may have to pay to get rid of it, I didn't have to pay, however, I did filler up to thank the guys.
