today I took my boat out on the lake, well the first time I ran out of gas  got towed back in, got gas and went back out....well the boat started over heating...

Got home took off the lower half of the motor where the impeller is, when I took it off I saw water....I mean only water...no oil anything...The impeller was very worn...I will replace that tomorrow hopefully.

Now what to look why is there water in there and no oil?

Help please!

BTW the boat is still extremly slow.

If you see any lower unit oil when you take the lower end off, you've got a problem. Only thing you should see is water. What you're seeing is normal.

Of course there must be oil in the lower. The screw it's where you fill the oil in the lower. It has 2 screws 1/fill 2nd /vent.
The very bottom of the drive there is a allen head screw to drain the oil.
Make sure you don't remove the screw on the side it will cost lots if you remove it.If there is any water in the lower then tell us about it.J

Re: What should I look for?

I have a manual.

I know there are 3 screws on the lower right side of the outboard.

I took the vent one out, the fill one out, and the one to drain it out on the bottom.

What screw is left?

It's possible that when you ran it out of fuel ,it pulled trash from the tank into the carb, that would explain the running hot ,because it's lean. You might want to look at the fuel bowl and see if you have trash in them. A lean motor will melt the pistons, especially the top ones due to being the farthest away, and less likely to get fuel through the trash restriction in the carb if that is the problem
