I have just bought a 17' fibergalss boat and is my second boat (1st is a 14ft alum).
I was just wondering what could cause a bigger boat to flip over on inland lakes.
I know to watch out for hidden money pits under the water, but was wondering what are some general things not to do.
I live in wyoming, and my biggest prob is wind and afternoon thinderstorms.
I would rather read about situations, rather than learn them the hard way.

I was also curious about turning too quick.
can that cause a flip over even with smooth water.
for example if a skier goes down, do i crank it or not.

Hello
well dont forget the plug. happens sometimes. dont forget your wearing the stop lanyard if you move from the helm it will let you know. always remember to unstrap the back of the boat as well.always keep an eye on the clouds. the weather channel is confused sometimes:) as far as flipping it that is a whole subject all to itself. I have had to go on water tests with the 18ft whalers the coasties run. trust me that boat will corner way tighter than I can.if this is your first boat that will make any speed play with it some while at a place you are familiar with. practice backing the trailer and looking for any blind spots or turning quircks. its terrible to get that new rig to the ramp and crash it while backing up. take time to get a feel for the boat before skiing or tubing. good luck and keep posting and remember the boat gods accept cash :)

Ten,

Your chance of rolling over a 17', moderately powered boat, are pretty slim.

The best thing to do is go out and make some manuevers to get the feel of it.

If it is a deep v design it will roll to one side in turns, quite a bit. However, I say again, it's pretty difficult to roll one over.

part of the way the cg establishes the hp rating of small boats is staying upright in full throttle turns. if you stay within the rating plate hp and weight it should be pretty hard to flip. going over either can be quite exciting. from personal experience. often in totally unexpected ways.

Thanks for all the info.
went out this weekend and tried it.
cornered fine, but when i turned pretty sharp.
it would act like the prob was spinning out.
was this just because of the turn.
