i have a 66 rude 40 hp and was wondering what should the idle beat ?

Fast enough to keep it running, but slow enough to keep from lurching the boat when you throw it in gear. I'd imagine about 750 RPMs in gear in the water, but I don't have the spec. Do you have a tach?

no i use my volt meter and that gives me the rpms

I assume he actually measures the frequency of the spark with a "multimeter" not a volt meter although a multimeter usually measures ac volts, dc volts, milliamps and frequency. plug fires once a revolution but you have to convert cycles (revolutions) per second to cycles (revolutions)per minute. Where he can find a voltage below the usual 1000 v max. I am not sure. may be the input of the plug coil. otherwise I can not figure it out.
