I have a 6 hp evinrude 1968 and I was wonderful what size boat it would run best with. I have a 14 ftx48" and it will run about 6mph with just me in it.

15hp and under is better suited for a 12ft jon boat but will work fine on your 14ft boat, just don't expect it to be able to plane. it will put along fine if you are not in a hurry.

you need at least bare minimum of 20hp to have any chance of getting on a plane with a 14ft jon boat but in absolute perfect unloaded condition a 15 can plane off a near empty very light weight 14ft jon boat

It just all depends on how fast and how far you need to go....

Well I mostly fish the river(s) I would like it to go at least 10 or 12. When I was in the creek with my 14 it took me forever to get anywhere

I run a 20hp, 2-stroke on my 14' tinny and I can get +/- 20mph and she hops right up on plane while alone, or with one passenger. I can still get on plane with 2 extra folks, but then I have to run WOT the whole time. If all you want is to cruise along at around 10-12 mph a 20hp will work nicely and leave you with a bit of power in reserve. The vintage 2-stroke models are also very light for the amount of power they make. I would recommend any Johnson/Evinrude, FD/E model, 18-20 hp motor from the mid 50s - mid 70s. There are tons of them available, they're dead simple to work on and make great power for their weight.

Agreed, you want to have enough power to get out of a bad situation if needed, rivers can be unpredictable. I have an 8hp on my 10' john, once on a river, took all I had to get under a bridge, wasn't a happy camper that day. Now it stays on small lakes, and scoot's nicely with 2 people but I should upgrade to a bit bigger, rated for 10hp.

Why not find a 16' - 18' jon with a decent motor and use the little one to troll with. Any size where your motor can move it comfortably is cramped for even one person with gear.

I don't need a bigger boat or motor. I have a 35 evinrude for this boat. I just need something to run my 6 on. It was free and I have a lot of pride in the motor therefore I want to keep using it
