Hi,
I'm looking at getting a kicker/backup motor for my 16' alum princecraft. Would a 2-1/2 hp 2 stroke move it around or should I look at something bigger? Thanks

In what way do you want to use it?

For trolling get a twin cylinder model, singles shake like crazy and tend to be louder. This can get old fast when trolling for even a short period of time.

As a back up just to get you back to the dock on a lake, most any small single or twin will move the boat well enough to get you back.

I would go with a twin cylinder engine for trolling as well.

I have tried both a 4hp single and a 6hp twin on my 14.5' Princecraft. The wind will blow me all over the place with the 4 but the 6 works great.

Any twin cylinder should work well and be pretty smooth for trolling. For getting you home in an emergency, 4+ would do it, 8+ would be more ideal.

Hi and thanks,
I use my boat for inshore ocean fishing on the east coast of vancouver island. I might do a little trolling but, my main concern is being able to get back to shore with my kids in the event of a break down and we typically fish 1 to 2 km from shore.

8HP minimum in that case.
