I have a 1960 3 HP Evinrude that the manual says uses a champion J6J which I can't find. I also have a 1969 6 HP that calls for a J6J but had something different in it. The 6 starts and then dies immediately. Anyway when I put the 6 plug in the three it bent the electrode. I cleaned the old J6J and gout the three started. Is there a new equivalent that I should be using for the Champion J6J?

Howdy, John.

What manual are you using for that 3HP? I believe that it is identical to the Johnson JW-16 3hp made in the same year, for which my OEM Service Manual calls for the Champion J4C (used to be J4J).

Your 6HP does call for the Champion J6C or RJ6C.

In most of the small OMC engines of the pre-CD era either J4C or J6C can be used. The J4 will give better high speed operation (cooler) and the J6 will troll and idle better without risk of fouling (hotter). At least that is the theory.

My 1960 'Rude 3HP was one of the smoothest, sweetest 2 strokes I ever owned, and I used J4Js in her.

Good luck. :)
