Hello, I just fixed up a 1972 evinrude lark 50 hp model number 50273C and was wondering what tach to get for it. I heard you could only use omc tacks also how do you know how many pols to set? Thanks in advance.

You don't just have to use OMC tachs. Other manufactures also make them and if you get one set it on 5 Pole position.

so that would make it a 10 pole system. 5 for each plug?

It means it's got 5 magnets in the flywheel and 2 poles for each magnet. 5X2=10.

Re: What tach for my engine

update, Boobie. I called CDI electronics and they said it was a 6 pole, 12 pulse system. the flywheel does have 6 magnets on the electric start and I believe 5 on the manual start. Stator has 8 whatever there called then two charge coils but the man said you have to count those as two each making it a 12 pulse. here is a good link to find out what pulse or pole you system is for future use. http://www.beede.com/TS-OTA.htm I believe the tach setting next to the pulse numbers are for that particular brand tach. 12 pulse equals 6 pole equals setting of 6 on most outboard tachs.
