What temp to look out for?

I have 1994 volvo penta 4.3 and am curious what temp should I be running. My gauge center mark is 180 degrees and when I first drive around its at a constant 200 degrees and after running around 25-30 mph for about a mile it will go up to 220 and sometimes will hit the max on gauge which is 240 degrees. I have a brand new water pump that I installed a year ago so I know it's not a problem. Is this normal or is something wrong? Also when I replaced the water pump I'm pretty sure I found all the impeller pieces.

None of the temps you posted are normal. 160-175 is normal. Is the exhaust smoking when you hit 240? Have you confirmed these temps with an IR gun?

No smoke ever, I just notice the heat from the engine. I haven't noticed any problems with boat other then the gauge telling me. And I have not confirmed with gun...

What drive do you have? 1994 seems too early for the 4.3L. I have a feeling you have an SX which is strange for a 94.

With those temps you should be having problems! What temps were registering on the gauge prior to the pump being changed? Buy or borrow an infra red temp gun. My initial thoughts are that the temp sender wire is grounding out on something.

Re: What temp to look out for?

There's over 30 different 4.3 models in the 94-2000 years.
Any serial#s or model#s.
What drive?
You have fresh water cooling or seawater cooling?
Fresh or salt water??
Could be?? The risers clogged? The heat exchanger clogged?
Cam in the water pump wore down.
Thermo bad?
Bad sending unit?
More info?Pics?

Re: What temp to look out for?

It's a sx drive and only used in fresh water. I installed the new water pump when I first bought it and I'm pretty sure it's always ran with that temp. I did notice the manifolds were slightly cracked after I dewinterized it this summer but I patched them and no more leak. The manifolds and risers seem original and pretty rusty in the inside (noticed when I took off hoses). It's been running fine with no problems but there could be something wrong and i have just not noticed.

You don't patch manifolds when they are cracked. You replace them. You have no idea if they are leaking from the inside.

So you have owned this boat since it was new?

No I bought it almost 2 years ago. Well I guess I'm ordering new manifolds! Should I go ahead and purchase the risers also?
