what the heck is going on

Quite the pickle I'm in again and wondering if anyone has dealt with anything simmilar.

I have an 89 force 150 and I noticed my top cylender wasn't fireing. Checked the plug and no spark. The top cd box I think its called runs the top two cylenders and #2 was fireing. Switched wires and #1 would fire but no number #2. So I changed the coil and it made no difference I then changed the box to those coils and still no difference. Then assuming it was a wireing issue I pulled out the wireing diagram and noticed the previous owner had a few in the wrong spots. So unhooked it and re did the wires to match the diagram and now I have no spark in #1 or #3. This baffled me. I don't know enough about it but seems he jerry rigged it somehow and for some reason to get the bottom 4 cyl to fire. I went to my spare and took the stator and alternator off figuring there must be an issue with the wiring going up there and put those on and re did all the connections again by the book and I'm still not getting spark on #1 and #3. What the heck is going on. The first pack runs #1 an 2 the second pack runs #3 and the 3rd pack runs #4 an 5. Myself and a few others more knowledgeable then me are quite stumped

Can u put it back the way it was?

You should have a wiring diagram on the motor. It looks like spaghetti but after a while it will get better.

Then try replacing the connectors on all the parts.
Trigger/CD's/stator.
They get brittle and can break and still look good.
Make sure the wires are all marked and take pics if possible.

Re: what the heck is going on

Thank you, so what i found out was that the previous owner had rigged it up so that cyl 3 was taking its power from a different box and thats why he had it wired that way. Apparently these boxes fail quite frequently. And just by crappy luck the one i tried from my spare engine was also fried. I took another one off to get my 1st cyl back and rewired the 3rd the way it was before and all is well again....SORTA..... I can't get the timing lines to line up. I think someone had messed it up before and as i started turning it the screw came out. I put it into the back part turning to the left and then connected the other rod and turned to the right. I was able to get the line close but not on. I'm also thinking its possible that the way I screwed it in may have gone way too much in the wrong direction when connecting it?? Is that possible or would it just stay where it was when i replaced the screw?? My reason for this concern is that I have my take off and close to full speed back but at idle she pops and bangs i guess backfiring and ends up stalling out. the rpms don't stay consistant, I can start it around 900 then it will go down to 5 or 6 and stall out when it back fires or sometimes even go up to 1500. I have the idle screw almost all the way in which seems rediculous to me and when it revs up it just bangs and pops more. Does any of this sound like it could be the timing. I feel its the only thing that is still causin me trouble and once done shes gonna run great again. Is there a certain way i need to set the timing screw first or what do I do. I appologize my posts are so rambled. I'm just at a total loss and learning all this as I go... Very knowledgeable summer lol

Re: what the heck is going on

First how are you trying to time it?
Static timing?
Or WOT timing?
The 3 marks on the flywheel are the timing marks.
The single mark is for finding TDC or to see if the flywheel key is sheared.
The 3 marks together is the timing marks.
The center one is for static timing.

I think on the powerhead somewhere is the wiring diagram.
Follow it and you will not have any problem.

Thanks just wasn't sure if it mattered where the screw was or if I had wrapped it around the wrong way or something. If that was possible. I just put the screw back in and tried to get it close. My dad helping me with strobe timing light. I guess that's static. So it doesn't matter as long as the lines line up ?

Re: what the heck is going on

Oh really. Well that is another problem then. I was doing it at idle speed around 900rpm. I havnt been able to get full throttle form my engine lately and I'm not able to get over 4500 rpm which has cut me down to 40 mph instead of 50.

So am I supposed to give full throttle in neutral and then put the light on and turn the screw so the centre line lines up with the line on top

Re: what the heck is going on

NO!!!
You need to do the static timing.
You would need a timing wheel to load the prop.(tech talk)

If you run it out of time your gonna burn it up.

Like i said top post(somewhere)is a post about static timing.(maybe not)(looks like someone removed the post)(guess someone doesn't like it)
You need to follow this or have some Mercury dealer try it.
You need:
A system to ground out all 5 plugs.
A timing light.
A jump box.
A manual?
Any Force manual 85/125/150 with static timing instructions will work.
