What The Oldest Outboard I Should Buy?

Hello, I'm looking for a good used boat and I'm pretty much set on Mercury outboard (in the 40-80 HP range). I've seen some nice ones out there but I'm concerned about parts availability. Assuming that I'll need a major repair at some point. What's about the oldest year I can buy and expect to find parts without too much trouble?

Thanks.

some parts are expensive from the 50's

if you boat in brackish water you want post 1982 or 83 for stainless shafts

wiring insulation falls apart on anything older than the early 90's

Parts are becoming a major issue on all older outboards.------But if you have the skills to do your own work and the " hunting / gathering skill " then parts motors can be found cheap, cheap. ----Will get you all the parts you want and time to have a spare motor ready to go.----Beats the $10,000 new motors that require $100 + / hr dealer support.
