I was curious on any ideas to make a stand for a mid 70s 140 hp mercury outboard. any help would be great engine is so heavy has me stumped. I have to get something to hold this engine so it can be sold.
Thanks for any help
Garrett
Why don't you make a base out of plywood and 2x4's and mount lawnmower wheels under it to make it movable, then make a framework out of 2x6's to mount the motor on. You could make the base large enough to hold a garbage can so you can run the motor if needed.
I had great luck with cutting a length of 2x10, drilling mounting holes and bolting it to an automobile stand. Then just clamp the motor to it. I am using this method on a '65 50hp West Bend I am rebuilding this winter. I picked up a used Motor stand for $20 and had the scrap wood laying around. It is overkill for my application but should work fine for you. If you are conserned about strength then double up on the 2x10's if your motor mounts will fit it.

**Just remember to pre-drill the holes to prevent splitting the wood.

Mike M.
Do you have a welder? I made mine out of some old pipe and signposts and about 2 feet of 2x10. THe biggest motor I've had on it is my 65hp but it could easily take a 140.
