Its that time of year I need to start planning on my boating season. Last year didn't work out to well since the boat I have started having issues. But luckily TD has helped me out with that. Now I find myself trying to decide if I want to repair my transom, or do I just go and by another boat to re-power with my 90hp Johnson. Or do I even go out and just buy another complete rig and sell the humble rig I have.

What's sad is I'm really chomping at the bit. In the next week or two I'll be receiving my bonus for all the sweat and tears I put into work last year. While it will be a nice bonus, I have made the practical deal with my wife that I'm only going to use half of the bonus for boating expenses, and save the other half. (darn the voice of reason!!!) So now this money is burning a hole in my pocket. LOL.

What does everyone think I should do?

I tried to slip one past her......In previous years my bonuses were paid out monthly and rather small. She said I could always keep my money and do what I want with it. Well since my promotions, I get my bonus yearly with a much bigger %. So when I found out how much it was I called her and asked, "you said whatever bonus I get I can keep right?" she said yeah....I said "oh, ok....btw this is how much its going to be." She responded with "um, I don't think so mister....lol" Seeing that I'm only the CEO of the household and only a "figure head", and that she is the CFO of the house and brains behind our sucess.....I had to abide by the board's decision. The deal was cut at I get half.......

Congrats! This is a good decision to have to make.

I would look at a complete rig. When I built a boat and needed the "stuff" I went to the OC boat show. I wanted a Hoda 50 and everything else needed for a bare hull incl. trailer. Brand new price $11,000.

They had a show boat there similar to mine w/ a 90 honda, the trailer, and the whole 9yds for $9,000. They would not even talk a discount package for everything but the hull and I wasn't going to strip a new boat.

I bought a used Merc.

You may get a good enough deal that the hassle of repair is not worth it. You may also find a buyer for your used stuff if you find someone building a boat.

I guess what I'm saying is look at all your options. THEN decide. If you buy new now is the time for sure.

maybe, i am a little bias, but you have a good running motor, a nice boat, that needs a transom soon. i do not remember how bad it is. you will never get near enough out of the rig, to buy a new motor, buy you have a good trailer. i would consider looking for a nice newer hull that you can used your trailer and motor. let me know by PM what your hull budget would be. TD

If the motor runs well and the boat is good except the transom....
How about spending some of the bonus on having the transom done at a shop?

c'mon this one's too easy to figure out. you need to convince her to spend her half on a boat as well. then combined you get one nice new rig.

bribery with small shiny things sometimes plies the purse strings a little.
