Hey guys,

I have a 1989 Wellcraft 170 classic that I recently acquired. The boat has on old fish finder wire coming out of the back and has three screws with clamps that secure this wire to the back of the transom. I want to remove this wiring but my question is what to do with the screws? Can I remove them and fill the holes or should I just screw them in all the way and seal around the screw heads?

Hey Blackrider........Aluminum or fiberglass? Any photo's? I'm no expert by far, but it's my opinion that when it comes to boats. No holes are good holes. Especially below the waterline. I had the same thing going on with my boat. I pulled the screws, drilled clean holes, filled with epoxy, then wacked in some rivets for a cleaner look. You may be able to go the way of filling the holes w/those aluminum soldering sticks and acetylene. It's a bit like filling auto-body dents with lead back in the old days, but that was for steel.

Yes she is a fiberglass boat. Is the 3M 5200 some sort of fiberglass microballon type of epoxy resin? Does it solidify hard or soft like silicone? Can I paint it after it has been smoothed?
