Whats a good replacement for the foam thats on the inside of my engine cover. Is there a lightweight soundproofing material that could be stapled/glued on. There must be something more updated then that original foam thats falling apart. Ideas anyone? I/o engine made of wood

As Paul mentioned, automotive soundproofing is widely available and will work fine. Just be sure that it is a type that can withstand some heat. Be careful when you install it for the same reason.

There are several automotive products on the market that might work. Are you looking for sound proofing material or just the foam something like OEM.

Here's a link to marine sound proofing materials:

Here is another one:

It doesnt really NEED soundproofing, but since the wood should be covered with something I suppose and I cant really see what purpose the foam really serves I was thinkn' something with a sound barrier might make sense.

I reattachaed my exhaust bellows this year for the first time in prob 8 years, and its so quite now, Was just gonna go 1 step further... Thx guys

I'm probably going to do the inside of mine in reflective insulation. It look's like insulation wrapped in foil used for wrapping ducting etc.

Just looking for some with a fire rating... It's listing uder products and bubble reflective insulation. The specs say it's good to 180F

http://www.resisto.ca/membrane-waterproofing/AYR-FOIL/Reflective-Insulation.aspx

Description: The AYR-FOIL A1V & A1A are vapour barrier & reflective insulation which increase
the efficiency of the insulation system. The white film contains UV resistant additives
for maximum protection and increased longevity.
These products are also available rolled opposite way (V1A) if required.
Fields of
Application:
? Walls and ceilings
? Crawl spaces
? Concrete Block walls

Hot water heater wrap is supposed to work really well. Basically it's bubble wrap with tin foil on the out sides. It's light and cheap and cuts the sound quite well.

Hey guys, I have been watching this thread closely as I have also been wondering about what to put on the inside of my doghouse. Thanks for the suggestions!

So just a thought...

Here is what the inside of my original doghouse looked like...

...which made me think of "Great Stuff" foam (I know that isn't whats in there, just made me think of it).

So, how about Great Stuff? Dumb? Smart?

Some good Ideas... Thx all. Im wondering if the Great Foam might tend to crumble easier and be messy and get sucked into the carb??? The auto soundproofing or waterheater wrap sound sound like the right direction. hmmmm. ;):D

Consider Dynamat, which is used in car audio installation yo cut road noise and engine noise. They have a version that is specifically for engine bulkheads and it is heat resistant. Looks to me like the foam is there just to stop vibration noise. Not the cheapest stuff, but the most effective I have seen.

I was looking at the Dynamat stuff too but the price was outrageous here. Do you know of any places online that have it cheap.

Anything you can use to keep the motor sound from bouncing around the engine compartment. I've seen blue board (not solvent resistent), carpet, soundown marine insulation, memory foam, and other objects of unknown origins used. Once saw a mattress screwed to top of the engine room in a commercial fishing boat! Good Luck.

This is one of those instances where there is an off the shelf solution that is safer, easier to use, and more effective than any homegrown solution.

There are both cheaper and more expensive kits than this one, but you will not find a better bang for your buck than the above link. Follow the instructions and use the included support pins. This is one of those "been there, done that" situations. If there was a better method I'd be using it.

Unless you like smokey toxic fires on your boat, be very very careful what you line your engine compartment with. This is a high heat, high vibration environment. Stuffing just any old thing in there is a really bad idea.

OK, I know this is an old dead discussion, however, I'm hoping Shife is still around and can provide the web address or the name of the material he discussed in his post above.

Thanks

Shife hasnt been logged on to iboats in nearly 4 yrs.

Start a topic about whatever you are trying to accomplish.

There are other good topics about insulating and sound proofing an I/O doghouse.

Bud (CC254) posted it in his refurb topic
http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat-...b-and-upgrades

But you'll have to read thru to find it.

Please dont post to inactive topics. After 90days w no new posts, treat them as library books: for reference only and not to be written in.

Shifes link is redacted because iboats is an online retailer and blocks competitors.
