What to use for a backing plate for a bimini top

I need to reinstall my bimini top mounts and want to do it right, not like the previous owner. I want to put backing plates in behind the fiberglass and use stainless screws/bolts. The hull has a slight curve to it where the backing plate will be. What is the best material to use for backing plate? Would a cedar plate work, or is plywood preferable?

I prefer to use a piece of aluminum or stainless, if you can put them in the vise and form them to the fiberglasses contours. and a good rivet works as well.
Stay away from the plastic pole bases.
