I am in the process of replacing the GPS / Fish Finder on my Ranger R72 boat. The old transducer was mounted to shoot through the hull and was quite large (old model Bottomline Sidefinder). I am in the process of removing it and the epoxy it was mounted in. When I'm done there will be some areas of the fiberglass hull that have that gray primer, or whatever it is, removed. These aren't large areas but I want to get the area cleaned up and restored before mounting the new transducer there.

Is that primer or epoxy paint? After smoothing it out what should I seal it with and should I put that down before I mount the new transducer?

Thanks
Rich

That should be epoxy from the last transducer, If it were me and i was putting a new one in i would just smooth it out and epoxy the new one in the same place.I would think epoxy/resin is what you would want to dress up the bilge area.

The gray I was referring to is the original paint/primer covering the fiberglass. The old epoxy is egg shell white. I contacted Ranger and they said about what you did, epoxy the new one on bare glass, let it set, then I can use any primer paint around the new puck transducer. I found some filler primer (Krylon, I think) at Home Depot. The label says it's for metal or fiberglass. I'm waiting on the transducer to arrive and I'll put it where the old one was which is where the original one was.

I sanded down the area, although there are some minor gouges from where the Dremel cut into the glass. I think I can mount the new one in a clear area close to where the last one was.

Thanks for your reply.
