I have just began a refurbish project of a Cape Horn 19'. The deck seems in good shape with no rot (marine plywood with coating) and I would like to keep it that way by putting some sort of paint that protects and seals it and do so in a one step coating after cleaning if possible. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

If indeed the deck is in good shape, I'd recommend the following.. Mix up a sealer using the following 1qt Tung Oil or Boild Linseed Oil, 2qts Mineral Spirits, 1 qt spar varnish. Apply liberally and wipe off any that does not soak in. Let dry for 48 hours. This will seal and preserve the wood. Then Rustoleum Pro Oil based paint with the added Acrylic Enamel Hardener. This will yield a very hard durable surface. You can add non-skid to the paint if desired.

What you are referring to sounds like a treatment for a wooden deck. This deck is wood but the wood is coated with fiberglass. I have spider cracks in the finish but no rot and I want to do something to it to keep it that way. A gel coating of it seems a be drastic. With that in mind do you think the second step of your suggestion..the paint mixed with hardener would adhere and not be scuffed off by shoes?

Okie Doke!!! Actually Paint is NOT a very good Sealer. Gelcoat would be be a much better choice IMHO. Spider cracks have their own set of issues and how to repair them. It would be much easier for us to help if we could SEE what your working on. Post up some pics so we can see.
