What type fuel or oil for 1959 10 HP?

I am working on a 59 Johnson, 10 HP. I got it started on 2 cycle fuel/oil that was just regular 87 octane and 2 cycle ashless oil. This type of oil says it can be used on any 2 cycle motor. I haven't ran it much, just testing it out and getting it running better.

Is there any special fuel or oil needed for these old engines? I know car engines (4 cycle of course) that used lead from those days need hardened valve seats if driven much. I wasn't sure if a 2 cycle needed anything special. thanks for everyone's help!

TCW3 Two cycle oil mixed with regular 87 octain fuel at 24:1 ratio will work fine. Nothing special is needed and unleaded fuel is fine. You CAN get into problems with ethenol blended fuels, but in some regions of the country it's almost inescapable. Old carb floats and gaskets sometimes don't like the alcohol, but at least most modern day replacement parts and fuel lines are more tolerant of it. My personal recommendation is when the engine is going to be shut down for more than a few days to disconnect the fuel line and let the engine idle until it stops to run most of the gas out of the carburetor. That, and keeping fresh fuel and using a good stabilizer or SeaFoam in each tank will help avoid most carb trouble.

TCW-3 outboard 2-cycle oil @24:1 mix. Use the other stuff for the weed-eater. It's not made for water-cooled outboards.
