This may seem like a strange question - but here it is. I have a 98 cobalt with Volvo Penta. It has a cracked block and exhaust manifolds. I am going to replace the engine and was looking around for a good replacement, and notice that all of them are chevy blocks, whether it is a VP, Merc, or OMC. So I guess I am not sure as to whether it matters or not as to what type I purchase? It is a 5.7 and I have come across a few engines that are complete but are OMC or mercruisers, and was just wondering if it matters what flavor I get. I can only see the real difference is the exhaust manifolds and that is mainly because they have the makers label stamped on the side. So does it matter if I replace with an OMC or Merc to a VP stern?

Thanks,
Brian

Just for information purposes, do you know what caused the damage?

Ayuh,... The usual approach is to buy a Long Block 350, 'n dress it in yer accessories...

You'd have to add in a set of exhaust manifolds to accomplish that...

It Froze, with water in the cooling system...

That is correct - I purchased it with the cracked block for a very low price. They had a rough winter in Austin TX two years back and there were LOTS of cracked blocks because it is not unusual to not winterize there because it does not normally freeze like it did that year. Some people don't mind the gamble I guess.
I appreciate everyone's help.
