I was just wondering which octane level you put into your boat engine?

This summer at the marina, I was pay $5.80 a gallon for 87 octane. Don't see any real benefit in dropping another $10-15 a tank full for 89 when its not really needed.

(Note, that's Canadian $$$)

Unless they have a high compression motor that needs the higher octane, I can't see why one would want to spend more for a less combustable fuel.

i am pretty sure that my marina back home only sells 93 octane. One reason why it is so much more than land gas stations.

as said above, most johnson/evinrudes are designed to run on lead free, 87 octane fuel. anything above is a waste of money, and can cause such things as pre-ignition. your marina, may be catering to the large inboards. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=283231

93 thats way more than 99% of motors need.
Had a friend with a 14 McCulloch that used 89.He ran 90 because that was the closest he could get.He swore it started and idled better on the 90 than 87.

Fairwinds Marina near the mouth of the Magothy only sells 87 octane - at a dollar more per gallon.

Re: what type of gas do you use?

you are mainly paying more at a marina because it take a lot more effort to pump gas on a dock.
they have to pipe it out to the dock, and use special equipment to do that.
plus the real estate there is not cheap.

I used to work for an environmental firm that was heavily involved in groundwater monitoring for major petroleum companies. Considering how many petroleum tanks/lines leak, I'm sure that the insurance rates are considerably higher than inland gas stations (effecting the cost).

Also, don't they use ethanol to boost the octane (the same stuff we have to worry about degrading when we are winterizing our motors)?

Re: what type of gas do you use?

I'd like to use the regular...87 octane. But in my neck of the woods...both 87 and 89 octane have ethanol in them. The high test does not, says so on a sticker attached to the premium pump....so I use 91 octane for everything...boat, riding lawn mower, snowblower etc. Haven't had a lick of trouble with any of my engines and one thing I did notice...the varnishing in the off season stopped..which has saved a lot of headaches for me...and the stuff seems to store better with a stabilizer rather than the 87.

Guess I've never heard that the high test stuff would wreck engines...I've heard about low octane fuels causing knocking in high performance engines with high compression. I also know when I get a load of lower grade diesel in my pickup...and the cetane level is down...she sure rattles a bunch more.

Unless the manufacture says to use high octane, I use 87 octane. :)
