I know i have read on here what it is, but i cant find it. i am repairing my transom. here is what i am doing. i am replacing a piece of wood on the inside and outside, that has sandwiched the transom in the middle with bolts. what silicone do i use to seal up around the outside of the wood. i have the 3m 5200 for the holes. i have a piece of aluminum diamond plate that i want to adhere to the outside board to dress it up a bit. what can i put on the outside wood to just seal some water out when i put the metal on it?

no it is a fiberglass...right now the previous owner had sandwiched the transom with two boards. at this time i dont want to rip into it and repair it right. so im going to use birch on the outside with a aluminum diamond plate cover. i am coating the birch with helsman spar clear to seal the wood. i just dont know what i should use in between them.

Not to many members here on the forum will be willing to help to a "Band Aid" fix on transom like this due to the fact it is usually not safe. How big of motor do you have and how big of boat is this?

its a 1966 larson all american 16 ft with a merc 95 hp tower of power. The transom is pretty strong it is not flexing. i just was going to replace the boards, they look old and i wanted to just dress it up with a little more chrome look.

I don't mean to sound negative but I don't think this is a good idea. I think I can see the concern in woods' replies. I'm not sure there is anything to adhere metal to fiberglass and make it strong.....Good luck.

Um.. guys.. I think he is talking about his mounting plates..not his transom.

I dont think his wood is rotting off or he would replace them..he just wants to dress them up.

Yes Johnny .. you can use 5200 to seal the diamond plate to the wood. ( 5200 will bond two ice cubes together ) Just make sure you scuff with 80 grit on the bond side.
