1963 Pacific Mariner, 17ft. I bought it for $100 from a lady who had it sitting next to a barn for 15 years. It was full of leaves and trash, and required a complete restoration. It had a Homelite 55, which I had to restor as well. It ran great, but was not fast enough, so I scored an 85 horse 1963 Merc, and it worked well with the boat. I also had to restore the trailer, which was a 1963 Holesclaw. I sold the boat to a young couple this last September, and now I am on my second boat, Project Skanky Beast.

Re: What was your first boat?

About age 15, Dave Morris and I built a jon boat using wood from a shed his dad wanted torn down. We calked it with tar, and used it duck hunting. A year or so later, we found an old 3 hp motor (can't remember the brand), and made it work. We sailed up and down the creeks, plus the Fox River (Illinois). Don't know what happened to it; Dave still may be running it. About 14' long, and 3 metric tons heavy.
Except for 3 years in college, I've had boats ever since....let's see, that was 45 years ago...

Re: What was your first boat?

The first boat I was able to take out myself was a 14' boat my father built from an early 60's design called the Sea Sled. Then in 9th grade I bought a 13' wood runabout. Then after high school a 13' Boston Whaler, 22' Chriscraft Cutlass, 20' Mako, 23' Seacraft, 24' Grady White, 17' Mckee, 25' Mako and finally a 15' fiberglass dory/rowboat. Oh yeah, throw in a couple of Hobie Cats.

Re: What was your first boat?

Eight foot plywood flat bottom row boat and after a year I got a 3hp Evenrude for it. At eight years old I thought I was it till a friend got a 13 foot aluminum with a 9.9hp. First boat I restored on my own was a 1973 18' Larson Velro Sport with a 351w and a merc 888 outdrive. Fastest Pinto on the bay. I now have a 1973 320hp 19' John Allmand. Something's sure change while others stay the same.
