What washers, etc with different props?

Strage, simple question, but I'm not sure I have it right....what washers, etc. go on with my prop? The reason I ask, I bought the boat with an aluminum (prop (Black Max I think) and I'm pretty sure there was a thrust washer on first, then the prop, then some spacer/washer with the notches (spline?) then a lock washer then the nut.

However, when I bought a Piranha prop it wouldn't fit down the shaft far enough with that set-up - the Piranha folks told me the thrust washer was not needed with their set-up.

So, a new SS prop now....how do I know if it needs the thrust washer or not? Also, which way does the thrust washer go on - it has a stepped diameter with a small dia. about 1 1/2" and the large maybe 2-3 ".

Thanks for any info or links on this subject.

Go with the mfgr's comment, but check him out. If it doesn't need the thrust washer, the front inner diameter should have a taper to it to fit the taper on the propshaft. The taper is what will limit the forward travel which must be limited otherwise the prop will/could grind right into the rear of your housing.

Also, if that is true, once you install it, the prop nut will have plenty of room to be secured properly, either by nut and lock washer (Merc) or cotter pin alignment of some others.

If the front (of the prop) is not beveled, or the tail end doesn't line up then I'd be asking more questions.

When shopping for props, I noticed that some props took different thrust washers (didn't shop the piranha) and they told you so and gave you the part number for the replacement washer.

Thanks. I'll check for the beveled end then. Now that i think of it, my SS prop I got on eBay may have a thrust washer stuck on it - I'll have to check when I'm at the boat next.

also, maybe the SS prop (not sure what brand) takes a different thrust washer then? I need to check that out as well.

If it does (have a thrust washer stuck to it) it will have a beveled inner diameter to fit the bevel on the front end of your prop shaft.
