What water pump kit/seals needed for replacement?

I have a 1991 Sea Ray I/O. I'm assuming that the outdrive is also a 1991, it says it is a Alpha 1 Generation 2 on the side of the unit. My brother had the outdrive rebuilt by a mechanic about three years ago, I'm unsure if it was both the upper and lower, nor am do I know the extent of the rebuild. The boat has probably had a total of 30 hrs put on it since the rebuild, and I took it to the lake a couple times this year and no problem. The outdrive started leaking gear oil (stinks) about one month ago just sitting in the drive, especially when the temp got up to about 110F for two weeks. It was dripping where the upper and lower units meet but I could not figure out exactly where. I checked the drain plug, still had gear oil. I had the idea that I was going to just fill it up with oil until the season was over, so I filled it up until oil came out the vent hole. But when I went to start it with water muffs on it,(the motor never started due to low battery), oil started coming out of two holes on the port and starboard sided in front of the bolts that hold the upper and lower together (I think this is the cavitation or ventilation plate, I appologize for my lack of terminology) and there was a substantial amount (probably a couple ounces). It has been sitting in the drive the past two days and no oil drip. So here's the questions:

1) Should I rip the lower unit off and try a repair or keep adding fluid... I'm thinking it cant wait?
2) Due to all the great post, if I go to repair it I want to change the impeller what kit should I get?
3) What parts of the shift shaft seals would I need to get?
4) What does the quad ring look like, does it come with any kit, or does it need to be ordered seperately
5) How important is torquing all the nuts, or can you say that feels about right?
6) What's the best place to order parts from, I'm in Tulsa, OK and marine stores are limited.

Thanks for all your help!

Before you take the drive apart, you need to find the leak. Remove the drive (you can't see many of the leaks with it on the boat) Drain the gear lube and do a pressure check. Use some soapy water in a spray bottle while the drive is pressurized to find the leak. The bubbles will pinpoint the leak
As far as the impeller, get the OEM impeller kit. It includes the gaskets and seals needed to replace the impeller.
Look at this thread.

Re: What water pump kit/seals needed for replacement?

Thanks for all the great info, it has helped me out a ton, especially that link you posted. I do have a question though, if I take off the entire outdrive do I need to replace the bell housing gasket? Can I just take off the lower unit, instead of the whole outdrive, and then pressure test? Bye the way, the links for homemade tools for pressure testing and oudrive stands are awesome, it helps a lot.

Thanks Again,
BenP
