The plugs always seem to carbon up and have oil on them. Would it be worth checking the timing of this motor? And how easy is static test, im going to need a helper to crank starter correct, ground plugs, shine on test area. Is the static test 2 degrees off someone on youtube mentioned different motor.

Don't even think about using a hotter or bent electrod plug. Those surface gap plugs were installed by Mercury for a reason and besides, they are easily cleaned and reusable multile times. Timing is not the reason for oil fouled plugs; it is the design of the plugs themselves.

It never hurts to check the timing, but if you have owned the engine for a while and the timing was correct when you bought it, it will not magically change so barring incorrect repair procedures, it should still be correct.
