what would cause severe uneven tire wear on a single axle trailer?

16 foot jon boat with haulrite single axle trailer 1982. my tires are bald on the outside of the tread and like knew on the inside. Any ideas what could cause this? It is doing the same on both sides of the trailer.

Here's what happened to my single axle trailer. I was getting more wear on the inside but same type of problem.

Turns out the axle was corroding at the spring perch ( where the axle and spring meet ). The metal had gotten so thin that it literally bent.

I built a new axle and when I removed the old one, a screwdriver easily went thru the old tubing at the spring perch.

Get an awl ( or other sharp pointed metal object ) and see if your axle is thin at that same area.

My guess is that your load (boat) is lighter than what your trailer has been designed to normally carry. Many axles are curved to compensate for the heavier load, but your boat is not heavy enough to take that curve out and you are running on the outside of your tires.

Just my guess...!

outside as in both edges of the tires? inside as in centers of tread area? low tire pressure.

Unintended toe-in can cause the same thing.

it sounds like a camber issue , the tires are out at the top tilting them in more at the bottom and running on the edge, could be a bent axle or spindles, if its out of alignment it would be outside on one tire and inside on the other, from being pulled sideways, a worn front spring eye bushing often is the cause for that or a bad spring but the same on bouth sugests a axle or spindle try getting the trailer on a flat smouth surfice and place a framing square by the tire and mesuring to the rim at top and bottom, and to check alignemnt a measure from the hitch to each tire it should be very close, and while its not a perfict way it will help find the issue

After rereading the opening question, this may be the answer. It all depends on whether the OP meant to say that his tires are wearing on both the outside, and inside, edges only.

Sorry all for the late reply to my own question, But come to find out it is a bent axle, right in the middle. I was two hundred miles away up to my Dads so was able to lift the boat off and get the axle bent down enough to were it would ride on the good tread and get me home. I'll either have to get a new axle or try to straighten this one. Looked like someone hit something cause the axle was bent up and towards the back of the boat. Thanks everyone for replying.
