What would have done this damage?

Well, after finally getting our WOT problem resolved (thousands of dollars later), the bozos at the boat park damaged both stern drives after our first brief test run with two sweetly running engines  We don't know who did this or how, but when we left the boat tied to the dock it was fine. When we visited the boat 5 days later it was obvious that there was a problem. One leg was tilted up higher than the other and both engines could be moved independent of each other by hand; in fact port was pointing in a different direction to starboard. Our mechanic removed both legs and this is what he found:

Apparently we need a new starboard transom plate, two new gimbal rings and repairs to the starboard propeller (the tip is slightly bent). My theory is that the boat may have been put in a different rack and lowered down so that the weight of the boat was on the legs, but all I really know is that it was fine when we left it and it has never been run aground or hit anything in the water. There was no visible external damage and no other marks on the boat.

Has anyone seen this type of damage before or have any theories on how this may have happened? We have filed an insurance claim and have been given a quote of $11,000 to fix it!! OUCH!

Obviously, someone hit your boat with theirs.

I'm not sure how the would have done that without damaging the boat in other ways Don, there is a big swim platform over both drives which is not damaged.

Under water space aliens?????? Who knows. I only had your first 3 very close up pictures to look at when I answered.
We can't tell you what happened or how it happened anymore than you can. It's broken and needs fixed.

We are pretty good at helping people fix things, not so good at answering your questions of how and why something got broken.

I realise you don't have a crystal ball and it IS early in the morning there so I'll forgive the sarcasm :p

I just thought someone may have seen damage like this before and been able to give me an idea of how it happened. As I said, there is an insurance claim involved and insurance companies are pretty good at not paying for things unless they can blame someone (and claim against them!). I don't want to be left holding an $11k bill when I had nothing to do with the damage.

I assume from your dialog, that the boat is rack stored??? If so, I would go with the "he who touched it last" theory and throw the boat yard under the bus. Put the ball in the insurance company's hands and let them fight it out with the others that potentially caused the damage.

Yes, that's what I've been thinking too. yes, the boat is rack stored, on the bottom rack due to it's size. The drives are normally close to the ground when it's on the rack and some racks are lower than others. My feeling is that they either but it in the wrong spot (and put it down on the legs) or otherwise it was damaged by impact with the forks or the dock on the way out. Either way, it's broken

I just hope nothing else is damaged. The engines have to come out so hopefully everything will be repaired first time and I can get on with boating... finally!

Have you talked to anyone at the boat yard about the damage? Obviously, they must've done the damage. They should, at the very least....cover your deductible.
