Evinrude 9.5 sportwin...guessing late 60s--early 70s? Anyone tell me anything about this motor? What would you pay for it, if it runs? Or would you go newer based on parts, etc? About all I know.

The 9.5s are either great running smooth trollers or a backyard mechanics worst nightmare, lol.

This is one of the later 9.5s, so it is better than its predecessor.

Check compression, test the motor mounts (notorious for going, causing poor running), and try to run it with the cowl on. If it wont run with the cowl on they usually have an exhaust leak. (Also notorious for this)

Consumable parts for this are still easily had such as carb kit, ignition, water pump, etc.... I actually have a full mechanics rebuild bag still sealed from the Peterborough plant, with everything you would need to do a full rebuild on a 9.5.

Awesome info HT. Love this site. So if it runs, and seems in good shape according to your clues above...any idea on a price tag for it? My buddy is asking 350.

$350 is not out of line for a good running motor. If Hightrim's criteria are met, and I NEEDED a motor, I'd buy it.
You're missing the choke knob. I also noticed someone drilled holes in the cowl---not a good sign as pertains to an exhaust leak. I personally far prefer the 10hp OMC's over the 9.5's, and wouldn't own one if I could help it. Check the lower unit for water. If the lower unit leaks and it won't run right with the cowl on, I would pass.

Again, great info. Looking like it may have issues from your points.

Good eye JBJ on the holes. Only 1 reason someone would do that. May have gotten the leak fixed by now, but who knows?

I buy them if the price is right as fishermen like them, they are low profile for casting over, but I wouldn't spend $350 without a test run?? How good a buddy!? :)

As stated, 350 is not out of line for a tuned, good running example. For an unknown it is too high. Just my 2 cents.

I've got a nice Yamaha 6 that I would take 500 for so I'd say that engine is a good deal. Here is a site with a ton of info on that engine:
Maintaining Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 part 1
Edit: that site is really for the newer ones but you may still find some useful info.
