What would you so? Which hull would you choose?

Hello all,

Consideration of this question has illustrated to me that there are tradeoffs to every setup, but here goes my apparent dilemma: I have a 1976 Mercury 1500 that I have painted and added new decals. The motor looks tremendous and is a rebuild with low hours. Initially, I had planned to mount the Mercury on an 18 ft. 1972 Cobia Sportster. The Cobia is deep V hull and very solid. I painted the floor with non-skid paint so no carpet is a plus. It has a 33 gallon built in fuel tank. It has gobs of room for fishing gear, people, skis, coolers, and just about anything else. It has been painted and looks very respectable for a boat that age. My intention all along was to mount the 1500 on it and go enjoy the lake. If I could wind up hitting 35 MPH, that would be fine with me. In a word: versatile

Now enter the 1978 Checkmate trimate 17 footer. I got it off of ebay for a relative steal when the fever struck me in the middle of the engine painting project. It is sort of a burnt orange color with metal flake. It only has a 12 gallon built in tank. I bought it with a blown 78 Johnson 115 on the back that pushed it about 45 MPH. The Mercury properly propped and mounted at the optimum height/trim angle should hit at least 50 MPH I would think. Fast, sleek, and cool are words that come to mind. And couple that with a Tower of Power and you have a truly rock star combo! But, the boat is smaller, has carpet, would be a rougher ride in the chop, and there is really little room to get up and spread out. It's a go fast boat that undoubtedly will look cool doing it, but I also realize that the Cobia is much more versatile. The Mercurys of that vintage go best with the faster, lighter hulls. In choosing which one to mount the Mercury on, it comes down to tradeoffs I know. I'm just looking for opinions or thoughts that might sway me. In short, the Checkmate is the sexy choice, but might it be less the settling down choice, LOL?

Thanks for thoughts, ideas, comments, or opinions!

Mmmm, the Checkmate is like a girl you'd like to sleep with, but not necessarily for a long term relationship ;)

If you choose this road, better to bring a few 5 gal. of gas! If you open it, i'm sure you won't do 2 hours with 12 gal.

Cobia....better long term solution. Based on your comments, I think you'd regret the Checkmate after a very short time.

However, I think you're obligated to post some pictures now.....especially after your comments about how sexy the Checkmate is! ;)

What body of water do you boat on? Depending on if it has choppy conditions, I would lean towards the Checkmate, if it will only be about a 3 or 4 year boat. How many people do you usually accomodate on the boat? Is all the room necessary? If I am correct, the Checkmate should be a closed hull, I personally don't like the closed hull, way too much wasted space. If it's a bowrider, I say go for it.

I think you will get tired of the Checkmate, and opt for the creature comforts of the Cobia in a very short time. The Checkmate is really a toy, not to be taken seriously.

Since the checkmate is a relative steal, go ahead and buy it. Many of us here suffer MBS.

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry I had no way to get pictures up. To answer some of the questions, whichever boat will be used on Lake Murray in the midlands of SC which from time to time as a rougher chop/and or whitecaps. The checkmate is an open bow and seats 2 in the front and driver/passenger seats with a bench seat in the very back. Another drawaback to putting the Merc on the Checkmate is that the older Mercury has the separate trim pump that must be mounted in the boat and the Checkmate has limited room due to the built in uel tank in that back as well. The Cobia I guess is the solid choice, but at the same time the 1500 would look great - alas the tradeoffs I guess. Thanks for all the input. Looks like I'm leaning toward the Cobia and it's ample room and deep-V. The only way it falls behind the Checkmate will be speed.

I've Never Caught Fish Going Fast. The Cobia Sounds Like A Good Choice.

Can you get another motor for the cobia(V4 Johnny)? Two boats are better than one.

You will not get any girls with the cobia, and you cannot put a theroghbred like that on a cobia, it just wouldn't look right LOL.
