I have a 22 foot sweetwater (fishing series) pontoon boat with a 60hp yamaha both 2001. just got the boat in June, took it out and would only turn about 4200 rpm with a 13.75X13. i got a new prop 14X11 and still only about 4400rpms. i took it to the shop and had the carbs and fuel pump rebuilt, runs alot better and turns about 4600rpm. when i was out on it to day, after about an hour of running almost wot the overheat alarm went off. i slowed to an idel and the overheat alarm turned off after about 3 mins. the water pump is in good shape and water is comeing out of the pee hole and out of the 2 holes just under the motor. a friend told me to take out the thermostat and that would help. any thoughts, is it just that it is to low rpms still or what. Thanks.

Do not run motor with out the thermostat, it is needed to restrict water so that it will circulate properly through all parts of the motor and make sure motor is at proper temp.

You can pull and replace or test to make sure it is working properly.

May need to have motor run with a test prop to see if it is putting out all the HP it is suppose to, If it is not then fix the motor, if it does then look at the prop or set up
