I picked up an older Johnson 6hp kicker and was wondering what year. He said it's a 1959 ?. Looks newer than that.
Also said it was unique because it was made in Belgium ? Is it special. Having trouble crossing the serial numbers...
They are BJ6BACDE
B0008587
Belgium

Any help appreciated.

'86 by the model number. I haven't heard of the Belgian made outboards being any more valuable.. someone else will likely chime in on that.

Good find as those years & model of that motor are great and almost bulletproof. As for being made in Belguim, typical salesman or promoting something he had been told for his gain, but not a good salesman because he sold you a newer motor than advertised. Your gain.

BTW
IIRC 1986 models were sold initially as being suitable for a 100:1 fuel mix

OMC later backed down over this . Correct fuel mix is 50:1 regardless of the manual and any decals that might say 100:1

In the model number BA indicates that ii has an AC lighting coil fitted. It's a 3 wire type and should be connected to a socket on the side

CD are the year letters C=8, D = 6

Thanks for the info.
The AC lighting coil. does that produce DC or AC current. Is it DC for charging a battery or AC for running AC running lights ?
Any idea what it's worth, I still haven't given the guy any money. He's a friend and was leaving town. Threw it at me and said, it's been sitting a while, get it running and whe'll talk money. Assuming it runs great, any ideas of it's worth. Maybe 400.00 ?

The clue is in the name ! It produces AC for powering lights .
If you need DC for battery charging then you need the battery charging kit which plugs into the lighting socket and which includes a suitable 4 wire rectifier .

If you use the system for lighting note the series/parallel configuration shown in the owners manual for wiring lights.

Re: What Year Engine ? 6HP, Belgium ?

Hi Carp,
I just bought close to the same motor from an ad on Craigslist. The model number on mine is J6SLCOB, which puts it as a 1985, and it says Johnson Seahorse Sailmaster on the cover. The main reason that I went to look at it, was it is a 20" longshaft, which I needed for my 12' Duraboat which has a tall transom. I cannot say exactly how good the motor is yet, as it is winter, and only ran it in a bucket, before buying, but all seemed well. Appearence wise, it is in amazing condition, I paid $350.00. As yours, mine is made in Belgium, but parts are listed for it under my model number at all the marinas. I plan to replace the water pump before use, as I got no history of maintenence performed from previous owner, and an overheat really does the small motors in. Quick story here, lesson also. Upon getting motor home and on stand, I squirted some oil into both cyclinders and loosely replaced plugs and wires. I ever so slowly used the starter rope to move pistons to spread oil in cylinders, moving it maybe 6", and the damn thing fired up and started running, scared the hell out of me.LOL! Really not funny, as it could have caused me a world of hurt in a different situation, but I have never seen a stone cold motor start that easy in my life. Hope it is that easy when I am fishing. Quick question to those who know. My outboard has two wires that are from the factory, and come out of an opening in the cowl near the pull start rope. They are all wrapped in a ball, and I was wondering if this could be the afore mentioned ac lighting circuit? Any more info on this motor is appreciated, especially any prop replacement information, not sure the elephant ear prop on motor now is what I will want for the duraboat.

Your Sailmaster is the same as my Evinrude Yachtwin

The twin cable is DC for battery charging. A rectifier is fitted as standard to the Sailmaster and Yachtwin versions.

The "elephant ear" prop is a high thrust prop, which also has a smaller pitch than the standard prop, and was fitted to the Sail versions

Another difference you may not have noticed are the two exhaust outlets in the leg extension. The normal outlet behind the prop is blanked off.
Although apparently a 20" shaft it should be mounted as though it were a standard 15" shaft. The idea being that on a sail boat the prop can be immersed deeper. If you mount it as a longshaft it will be very noisy as the exhaust outlets will not be properly submerged. It may not therefore be suitable for your boat

Not sure what a Duraboat is but this engine is designed for a relatively slow heavy sail boat hull. Not a fast runabout.

If you check the water pump. Remove the 5" extension with the gearcase. Then clean the drive shaft and remove the extension. If you try to remove only the gearcase the water pump impeller key will probably damage the pump housing (Dont ask how I know this !)

The grommet at the top of the water tube is a PITA in these engines. It is almost worth pulling the power head and renewing it every time the pump impeller is replaced
