I have purchased a 65 hp merc there is a red band on the cover its marked as 650 it is 4cylinder and has 2trim attachments,it has been sitting for 2 years but now the wiring needs repair,it didn't come with controls but i have controls and a wiring loom from a 50 hp of about the same vintage, but i dont think it had trim control , What problems am i likely to have to fix with an older motor such as this, and any imfomation at all would be greatly appreciated.

if you post the SN# that will help alot in finding out the year and do you know the year of the 50 that the controls came off of

Mercs with the red band are typically from the late 60s/early 70s. My 80hp 1971 has the red band, mid 70s have the blue bands.

Parts are available, sometimes pricey for original Merc parts. OEM are a bit cheaper. If you can get the serial number there are charts that will tell you the exact year of production. Look above the transom clamps for the serial.
