Could you do me a favor and double check that site?

Your reference definitely covers the serial number range of my motor but mine is a "4" and not a "4A".

It probably doesn't matter but they do list 4 M / 4 ML / 4A M / 4A ML. Do you think it matters whether I have the "A" in my serial or not ... probably not!

No, it doesn't mean a thing for the year of manufacture. These are Mariner engines built by Yamaha in Japan and you will see A/B/C etc for their designators.

I notice that the Mariner line is lumped together with Yamaha (as you mentioned) ... can I assume that parts are interchangeable?

If so, and when I'm searching for parts, can you (or someone) tell me which range-of-years can be used by my 1986 4HP Mariner?

I just looked at the Yamaha 1986 4 hp and as their p/ns are a different numbering system, I wouldn't be able to confirm a cross reference for you.

Maybe someone else can help you with this one.
